When we talk about the 'clarity' of a diamond or gemstone, it refers to whether the diamond or gemstone has blemishes or flaws within it or on its surface.
The 'clarity' of a diamond is an important measure of its value, because naturally occurring diamonds with perfect clarity are extremely rare and hence immensely valuable.
An imperfection or flaw in a diamond generally refers to a flaw within the interior of the diamond and can include minute spots (white, black or other colors), cracks and crystals (colored or uncolored).
A blemish in a diamond generally refers to a flaw on its exterior surface and is usually a result of imperfect cutting and polishing.
The Gemological Institute of America has prescribed the following grades for diamond clarity. These are measured under 10 x magnifications.
Fl (Flawless): These diamonds have absolutely no flaws or blemishes
IF (Internally Flawless): These diamonds have no flaws but show a few occurrences of blemishes.
VVS1 & VVS2 (Very Very Slightly Included): These diamonds have such miniscule inclusions that they are even difficult for an experienced grader to detect.
VS1 & VS2 (Very Slightly Included): These diamonds have very minute inclusions that are not easily seen by even an experienced grader.
SI1 & SI2 (Slightly Included): Inclusions are present and they can be identified by an experienced grader.
I1, I2 & I3 (Included): These diamonds possess very obvious inclusions and they affect the brilliance and transparency of the diamond.
